14. Katsura Tree Mistake
Hanna’s Heart Katsura is not like the original
The one tree I knew I wanted when we bought the house was a katsura tree. We had rented a house on Bainbridge Island with an incredible, huge multi-stem katsura tree at the center of the house.
I had a really hard time finding the exact tree that I wanted: a Katsura Cercidiphyllum japonicum with a multi-stem. Finally, I found a local plant retailer who told me they could get me a multi-stem katsura tree from their wholesale provider.
Great. Perfect. I was so excited.
The tree arrived and I planted it — and then I read the tag.
After basking in the glow of having planted my dream tree. I thought I would look up what the other tree tag Hanna’s Heart Biringer Katsura is all about. To my shock, this katsura is not at all like the majestic katsura tree of my dreams.
Katsura Comparison
A traditional katsura tree is about 50 feet tall and equally wide. Hanna’s Heart Katsura is only 25 feet tall and 12 feet wide.
I had to think fast and move that tree! I found a suitable home for Hanna’s Heart as part of our privacy screen at the guest house. A new traditional sized katsura tree was just purchased on-line; I gave up on the multi-stem.
