47. Street Trees

Layers and rhythm plus seasonal interest.

Last year, I started development of the 300 feet of street frontage; see my post about the street screen here. I planted Sweet Bay Magnolias (SBM) 35’ on center at the street and Japanese Accolade Cherry Trees (JC) in an arcade centered on the main house.

Adding to Layers and Seasonal Interest

This year I am adding Oklahoma Redbuds (ORB), Dogwood Trees (CKR & CCV), and Crape Myrtles (CMT & CMD).

My hope for these additions is three fold:

  1. Increase privacy for the property

  2. Provide seasonal interest

  3. Highlight the entry points to the property

    1. This is really tricky since there are multiple entry points and I would like it to be obvious for guests and delivery people to know which one to use, but I may have to resort to signs. Ugh.

The next step is to buy the three Cornus Kousa Radiant Rose (CKR), the four Crape Myrtles (Tuscadora CMT and Dynamite CMD), and plant the eight Oklahoma Redbuds (ORB) which should already be on their way. The Cornus Controversa Variegata (CCV) was already planted earlier this year. There is so much more layering that will happen here, but I just want to get the trees planted since they take so long to grow; the trees are all shown at 10-year size in the plans above. More details to follow!
