50. Lupine Seeds

Does soaking the seeds make a difference?

I did not expect these results, so much so that I wanted to share!

I purchased two competitor Lupine seeds and sowed 400 into trays; see my post on Impatient Lupines. I had some seeds left over, which I soaked over night. Both seeds are for Lupines. The Russels Blend is for Lupinus Polyphyllus which is a big leaf lupine and the Outsider Pride packet is for Lupinus Perennis which is a wild lupine.

Before

This is a photo for the full package of seeds — 250 in the one and 500 in the other. Note the color and size of the seeds.

After

This is a photo after one night of soaking. Note this is for the left over portion of seeds, after I had sown 400 in the trays. Especially with the Russels seeds, the color and size difference is remarkable.

Let’s take a closer look at the Russels seeds. I did not expect such a big difference. Before soaking, I had lightly sanded the seeds, not sure how much of a difference this made.

Planting

Instead of trays, these soaked seeds went straight into the ground. The before and after sowing picture don’t look like much, yet, but hoping to see something in about 14 to 35 days. Not sure how much the seeds will tolerate evergreen tree needles, the area was covered with them.

My next step is to mark my calendar for February 12th, to give you an update.

2025 Update: one year later, three (yes, that is 3 out of about 400) survived…
