20. Patio Design Logic
Extending inside rooms out.
By creating alignments with interior floors and exterior patios, you can significantly increase the apparent size of interior rooms.
Here is a look at our patio plan, which began with an unexpected deck demolition. One of the great surprises of our deck demolition was the discovery of a large koi pond. With the deck gone, we wanted to make several other improvements to the patio area:
Design Goals
In the past, the corner patio felt sunken next to the raised deck. In the new plan, we want to make this space feel more prominent.
In the past, the deck and railings dominated the view from our windows. In the new plan, we want to see more greenery.
With the deck gone, the existing corner patio now naturally sits high on the site. Design Goal #1 achieved!
A planting plan is in the works. Design Goal #2 achieved, in theory. The view outside of the window is still a pile of dirt.
Feasibilty Goals
The scope of work has to be within our limited skillset and budget.
We considered cast in place concrete for the patio and/or steps down too the pool, but ruled it out in favor of porcelain pavers, stepping stones, and kebony walkways. These are more DIY friendly.
Then Now and the Future
Timelapse comparison of the plan from the past, what we are building to now, and where we hope to take the design in the future.
In the future, a significant interior remodel will align the interior spaces with the exterior. Most significantly, the level of the lounge floor will be lowered to align with the new patio. This taller lounge with floors and walls aligned to the patio will create an awesome inside/outside space.
My next step is to work on the now, making our material order for the patio next week!
