34. Relocated Rhododenrons

Rhododendron on wheels.

Transplanting rhododendron is fairly easy. Rhododendron plants have shallow roots and they tolerate being moved. Here in the PNW, my neighbor goes so far as saying Rhododendrons grow like weeds.

Big weeds.

My biggest problem with transplanting rhododendrons is the weight of the tree and soil. This Christmas I received a Gorilla Cart with removable sides which turned out to be a great platform for moving these leafy, green beasts.

Rhododendron Screen

So where are these rhododendron going? Rhododendron are evergreen and en masse they create a privacy screen.

I started work on our south privacy screen last year. The Magnolia tree and Japanese Maple I planted there did not survive, so I had some gaps to fill.

Rhododendron to the rescue!

After transplanting six more Rhododendron, we now have a total of nine Rhodies there. Plus, I have started a small army of Rhododendrons in a cold frame, so in future years, I hope to add many more.

These diagrams show plantings at mature sizes. In reality, the screen is not very effective. Yet, I hope.

The next step is to keep filling in the gaps.
