66. Propagation Schedule V2

When to propagate which plant?

A running list of what season to propagate plants based on internet research and my own experience. This is Version Two (V2) dated February 23, 2025. Version One (V1) was dated January 17, 2024.

Multi-Season

These seems to work nearly anytime in my mild climate (in Zone 9a)

  • Azalea

  • Begonia (I want to try this)

  • Boxwood

  • Escallonia

  • Euonymus (burning bush)

  • Vinca Major Periwinkle

Winter

Late winter (February/March) after last hard frost for hardwood cuttings

  • Blueberry

    • Will try in Winter 2025, not for orchard but for colorful shrub

  • Crape Myrtle

    • Guess it won’t work, but tried cuttings in Winter of 2025

  • Dogwood Shrubs (Variegated Dogwood, Kelsey Dogwood, Red Twig Dogwood)

    • Overall big success with bin propagation, variegated was a fail, but I think the parent plans were duds, trying lots of sticks this year, highly recommend

  • Redbud (Rising Sun Redbud)

    • Fail, so far

  • Willow (Dappled Willow, Weeping Willow)

    • Overall big success with bin propagation, highly recommend

Spring

Late Spring/Early Summer (May/June) is the ideal time for Softwood Cuttings

  • Clemantis

  • Fothergilla (want to try this year)

  • Gardenia

  • Hydrangea

  • Weigela

  • Wisteria

Summer

Late Summer (August/September) is the ideal time for Semi-ripe Cuttings

  • Arborvitae

  • Distylium

  • Evergreen Shrubs

  • Hebe

    • Fail

  • Herbs

  • Holly

    • Success, but very slow

  • Laurel

  • Juniper

    • Mostly fail, burley blue doesn’t work, Wichita blue seems OK, takes a long time

  • Sedums

    • Awesome, worked great, quick

  • Spirea

  • Star Jasmine

  • Sweet Olive Osmanthus

Fall

Fall (October/November) is the ideal time for Hardwood Cuttings, after leaf drop

  • Anise (Ocala Yellow Anise )

    • Really recommend

  • Arborvitae

    • Seems to work, but still in pots, so very slow

  • Barberry

    • Tried with cuttings in Fall 2024, jury is still out, spring cutting failed

  • Blueberry

  • Camellia (Japonica and Sasanqua)

    • Last year was a big flop in winter, trying new batch this year but doing it with fall cuttings

  • Cryptomeria (Black Dragon, Sekkan Sugi)

    • Seems like it may work, just really slow, tried planting one in ground and it died, but the ones in pots in hoop house still seem alive after 1 year

  • Daphne

    • So far so good for cuttings made in fall 2024

  • Heaths

    • Small success, I had tried in spring before without success, the fall 2024 cuttings seem good still

  • Holly (Steeds Holly)

    • Working, but still super small even now 1 1/2 years later

  • Hydrangea

  • Maple (Vine Maple)

    • Seems to work, but still really small, potted up and living in hoop house

  • Juniper (75% perlite — takes 1 year to root)

    • Wichita Blue — Fall 2024 = seems like still alive 3 months later

    • Burly Blue Juniper — Fall 2024 = all fail

  • Katsura Tree

    • Failed

  • Madrona Tree

    • fail

  • Mulberry

  • Ninebark

  • Pieris (Pieris Katsura, Pieris Japonica Variegated)

    • This is a success, even my very first try in 2023 worked, and the bin propagation works like a charm

  • Quince

  • Rhododendron

    • Fall 2023 were potted up in 2024 and a new bath from Fall 2024. Success rate maybe 30% but bin propagation is super easy. High recommend.

  • Spirea

  • Thrift (Alpine)

    • Fall 2024 clumps, not propagated but just big clumps, seems to work like a charm

  • Weigela

  • Yew

    • Fall 2024 cuttings looking good after 3 months, planning to pot up soon

Want to try

  • Irisene

  • Impatiens

My next step is to continue sharing my success and/or failures stories with others!
